Manglik dosha explained: houses, strength and cancellation

Mangal Dosha is one of the most feared and most misread ideas in Indian astrology. It describes Mars sitting in specific houses of the birth chart, and it is far more often cancelled than it is decisive.

The dosha houses

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna creates Mangal Dosha. Many jyotishis also check the same houses counted from the Moon and from Venus, and treat the dosha as strong only when it repeats.

The reasoning is simple: Mars is heat, assertion and impatience. Placed on the houses of self, speech, home, marriage, longevity and expense, it raises friction in exactly the areas a marriage depends on.

How strong is it really

Mars in its own signs Mesh and Vrishchik, or exalted in Makar, gives dignity rather than damage. An aspect from Jupiter softens it considerably. A Mars that is retrograde, combust or in an enemy sign is the one to pay attention to.

Most readings also treat the dosha as fading after roughly the age of 28, when the natural Mars period of life has passed.

Cancellation rules worth knowing

When both partners are Manglik, the dosha is considered mutually cancelled and no further remedy is needed.

Other cancellations include Mars in a movable sign, Mars conjunct or aspected by Jupiter or the Moon, and Saturn occupying the same dosha house.

Common questions

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Yes. Most cancellations apply through sign dignity or aspects, and an experienced reading weighs the whole chart rather than the single placement.

Does Manglik dosha affect anything besides marriage?

It is read mainly for marriage, but a strong afflicted Mars can also show as impatience, accidents or conflict at home.
